As the seasons change, so does our skin. It’s time to reevaluate your beauty routines to make sure our warm-weather faces are still radiant come the cooler temperatures.
As the days grow shorter the air becomes drier, your skin may lose precious moisture. Sun, chlorine, and saltwater may have taken a toll on your skin throughout the summer.
Autumn is a time of transition, and the best autumn skin care routines will correct any summer damage that has occurred and prepare your skin for winter.
There are tons of ways to prep your skin for the cooler days ahead.
◦ Ditch the soap. Fragrant soapy scrubs might smell and feel amazing after a day in the sun, but they leave your skin dry. When fall arrives, switch to a hydrating cleanser.
◦ Exfoliate. The summer sun and chlorine may have left your skin feeling dry and flaky. Start the new season off with a full-body exfoliation treatment. Exfoliation is imperative when it comes to repairing and brightening the complexion. It’s also essential in reducing breakouts as it removes the dead skin cells that trap oil.
◦ Switch from lotion to cream. As the air becomes drier, your skin needs a thicker moisturizer. Creams provide a stronger oily barrier, which means they both reduce water loss from the outer layer of skin and provide hydration to this layer of skin at the same time.
◦ Protect your lips. Start moisturizing now to prevent dry, cracked lips this winter. Use a non-petroleum based lip balm for best results.

You will also want to reassess your sunscreen strategy. Sunscreen should be worn year-round. Protect with SPF. This may come as surprise, but fall is a season where a tremendous amount of UV damage is incurred. We often think that when the temperatures are cooler outside, the sun isn’t as harmful, but this isn’t true. While the UVB rays (the ones responsible for causing suntans or sunburns) are not as strong in autumn, the UVA rays (the ones that cause skin cancer and premature wrinkles) are just as strong as they are in July and August. Protection is a year-round job, so be sure to apply a sunscreen!
Another symptom of the summer months is larger pores. YIKES! Sun and heat cause the skin to produce more oil, which—along with dirt that fill up and stretches out pores.

During the summer months, gel and foaming cleansers are great for deep cleaning morning and night; however, these may be a bit drying once the temperatures cool down and less oil is being produced.
Toners are often an overlooked step in a skin-care regimen. If you aren’t already using one, now’s the time to start. Toners that are alcohol-free are a great way to give your skin the water and hydration it so desperately needs in the fall, when the temperatures are cooler.
Get a mask makeover! It’s time to consider making the switch to a cream mask if you are feeling some dryness. These contain moisturizing oils that help to deeply hydrate and plump up normal to dry skin types. Many cream masks do not need to be rinsed off after they have dried (unlike traditional gel or clay masks), but you can tissue off any residue and leave the excess to give your skin an added boost of moisture.
